Courage, Kindness and Never Give Up! – Bear Grylls‘ Motto

About Bear

“Bear had a real hunger to explore from a young age. Always curious. Never still. Eager to discover new places and follow the path less trodden. And the story is still being written…”

Bear Grylls is the world’s most recognized face of survival and outdoor adventure, having spent his career in the wild, navigating some of the most extreme landscapes on earth and coming out of the most dangerous situations alive and unharmed.

Last year, Swiss Made watch brand Luminox announced an exciting long-term partnership with Bear Grylls together with the introduction of their first timepieces.

“It’s incredibly important to me to work alongside world class trusted partners and Luminox have proved that and more. I’ve been wearing Luminox since my early adventuring days, so it’s great to now be a part of the family. The rugged watch range has been carefully crafted featuring multi-functional design and state of the art materials – set to inspire and encourage the adventurer in everyone – men and women, boys and girls, outdoor novices and experts.” – Bear

Who is your biggest inspiration? And why?

My Dad who was a former royal marine commando and always an adventurer at heart. My earliest adventure memories are of climbing with my dad on the sea cliffs around the Isle of Wight, which is where my dad first taught me the fundamentals of adventure: keeping moving towards the mountain before you, even it is scares you, respect and humility mean more than wealth and status, and above all never give up.

What would you say our wake up call is today?

To slow down, to spend more time with those we love, to do more to protect the world.

What is your mental practice before and during the most difficult times and situations?

Obviously, and as COVID has nicely reminded us, as humans we’re very small when faced with nature.

How did you survive the most dangerous animals or situations?

Top of the list is to adopt a survivor mindset to never give up. Tenacity, a dogged determination to keep going despite the overwhelming odds. That spirit is key to staying alive on all adventures. Ultimately this matters more than any amount of knowledge or skills. Resilience is also a muscle that gets stronger when worked over time and that fire inside is in us all, and it can change everything. Couple that with positivity and kindness, and you have the winning ingredients for the wild and life.

Have you ever failed? What do you think about failure and how can we learn to fuel the fun in failure?

Countless times.  I always think with any big goal or vision you set, be prepared to fail. The truth is, the only way you can get somewhere meaningful, the only way you’re going to get your dream, to your goal, is through the door of failure. There are no back doors here. But if it’s a goal worth achieving, hang on in there and never give up.

What was the scariest thing you’ve done which you didn’t you could survive?

Probably a parachute failure whilst in the military – I had a freefall accident whilst I was serving with the British Special Forces – I was in Southern Africa and a canopy failed and I broke my back in three places. I had to spend 12 months in and out of military rehabilitation in back braces and hospitals and it taught me the simple lesson that life is fragile and that if we are lucky enough o survive we have to get out there and grab life with both hands! Gratitude and humility are hard won lessons but the wild teaches them in spades over time.

Why did you decide to partner up with Luminox? What about the brand appealed most to you?

I have worn Luminox from as long as I can remember – certainly it was the watch I trusted when I was in the military. They have been the watch used by Navy SEALS for over two decades now. It is why our new range of Bear Grylls watches with them was such a logical step. I trust them when it matters.

What are some of the exciting things you have planned to do with Luminox?

We have the world’s toughest race airing soon on Amazon Prime – and Luminox were key for me & many others during that expedition.

What is the first thing you will do once the lockdown is over?

A mix of catching up on filming and then a paragliding trip with the family…

Thank you Mr. Grylls! Be safe and healthy.
