I just got back from Mexico City, my new favorite place on earth, and there I met Jorge Acevedo, founder of SANTA LUPITA, a brand which I had never heard of before. But quickly it captured my attention because as you know I’m a sucker for good stories!
Jorge’s story is one of those you read about but never imagine possible for yourself. Five years ago, Jorge, then Strategy Analyst for the transport industry decided he wanted more for and from his life. Money and status weren’t enough to drive him anymore. He needed to live a life where his values, purpose and need for contribution were fulfilled.
Jorge left everything behind and for a year went on a soul-searching quest around the world. Upon his return to Mexico, his mind full of ideas and heart full of hope, he decided to create a brand which would not only be aspirational but also inspirational. What better than tap into the country’s natural resources and traditions to create something unique and relatable?
And that is how Santa Lupita was born!
MEET JORGE
ABOUT SANTA LUPITA
Every single item is hand-woven, embroidered and carefully designed to meet the expectations of fashion-conscious customers. The designs are based on traditional Mexican patterns, colors and structures and created in close cooperation with indigenous artisans and fashion experts from all across Mexico.
Every single item of SANTA LUPITA is a colorful expression of the rich cultural heritage of Mexico.
No synthetic fibre is being used and the colors are all natural, produced by artisans in remote areas, from their private homes. These women are the perfect multi-taskers, taking care of business and family all at once.
Unfortunately because of mass production and price consciousness, this tradition has been abandoned by many artisans who simply can’t afford a decent living standard with this activity alone. So sadly high quality Mexican Folk fashion is at risk of being lost forever.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
- New market opportunities for Mexican artisans and craftsmanship.
- Attractive brand to international customers contributing to the preservation of this tradition and savoir-faire.
- Distinct from fast fashion – increase the appreciation of handmade products.
- Entrepreneurial mindset fostered and encouraged in Mexican Artisans.
- Promote work-life balance for women in remote areas. Each item is handcrafted by one artisan at her own home. Artisans in rural areas are incorporated into the workforce without being forced to abandon their communities: no central factories, no sweatshops!
- Preservation of cultural heritage by passing traditions from one generation to the next one.
- Support local artisans and revive a slowly disappearing heritage.
- Implementation of traditional production techniques. All items are hand-woven and/or hand-embroidered, promoting the conservation of one of the world’s most elaborate and beautiful fashion traditions.
- Offer high quality based on natural fibres to reduce impact on climate change. Selected collections are dyed with natural inks.
Traditional and handmade is glamorous!
