Davos: ski resort, home to the World Economic Forum and to the Waldhotel, a superior 4 star hotel tucked away in the forest, almost like a giant tree house.
I can’t lie and pretend that Davos is on my “favorite” list. I don’t find the village charming: the architecture lacks personality and style and the overall look and feel is a bit industrial. I was eager to see if this experience would change my mind about Davos and make me want to go back! Let’s see…
Having said that, Davos has plenty to offer for everyone. Whether you go in the winter or summer, there is plenty to do and see. For those fun seekers, there are countless clubs and bars hosting top DJs during high seasons. Foodies will not be disappointed and sky fanatics will find ample to do and experience.
FIRST IMPRESSIONS
Not surprising at all that the drive there was one that took my breath away. I always seem to start with this observation but it’s the truth! I don’t think I’ve ever not been blown away by the magic and beauty of this country. Every turn, every corner, every sight is sheer bliss.
As we got to Davos, we kept driving, passing one store after another, one hotel after another. Finally after a few turns and corners, I recognized our hotel, huge from a far, standing there, watching over the valley almost like a proud parent protecting his/her kid from a distance.
We had left a gloomy Zürich and got greeted by a flawless blue ski! I couldn’t have been more excited.
Upon our arrival, we got greeted with a huge smile by no other than Raphael Herzog, the hotel’s general manager, and his staff. The energy was undeniable. They truly were excited to have us (and my fellow press friends) and share a piece of their new winter home with us.
Our room was huge, open and modern. Not to mention the terrace which looked over a never-ending valley! It promised to be a fun weekend 🙂
ABOUT
Before hosting travelers looking for an escape, Wald house, then a Sanitarium, used to host the European bourgeoisie in need of medical help. The house was put on the map thanks to the novel “The Magic Mountain” by Thomas Mann, since then considered one of the most influential works of 20th century German literature.
Today the hotel tastefully allies old and new – with multiple restorations and renovations over the years.
Raphael and his team who moved from Vitznauerhof, their summer home brought with them their personal swag by adding their personality, new furniture, colors and ideas.
DINING
Be ready to experience a culinary delight like you have not in a while! After a very successful summer at the Vitznauerhof (“GaultMillau Discovery of the Year of German-speaking Switzerland” and was awarded 16 points after only 4 months), Raphael decided to bring Sens to the mountain. Dutch chef Jeroen Achtien, young in age and extremely advanced and successful in his career loves to innovate and experiment with ingredients and tastes. He’s also a Grand Master of fermentation!
If you haven’t planned any trips, this is the perfect time to consider Davos and especially Waldhotel. The resort is in full swing.
I will definitely go back to answer my own question in the beginning!
